What qualifies you to represent the people of Hawaii?

As Speaker of the House, I work to be independent and encourage all House members to participate in decision making. It is important to engage all members. The diversity of the House makes for better decision making.

What are the top three challenges facing the voters you seek to represent?

District 26 issues include homelessness, development and traffic-related issues (including private road ownership in Kakaako)

If elected, what will be your highest legislative priority?

I would like the House to make responsible fiscal-related decisions to ensure a stable government in the long run.

If elected, what can you do to improve the lives of your constituents?

Homelessness is a long-term issue that requires multifaceted planning and efforts. In 2018, the Legislature approved $30 million to create five "ohana zones" -- three on Oahu and one each on Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Islands. Ohana zones are intended to be transitional shelters (not tents) that provide various services (e.g., employment, transportation and child care). The State Administration must implement ohana zones immediately.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?

I will continue to work to clarify the ownership status of Kakaako private roads. In 2018, the Legislature approved a law that requires Kakaako private road owners who charge for the use of the roads to conform them to city standards. This means that the current private roads must have adequate sidewalks, drainage, and other features. HCDA is currently attempting to enforce this new law upon Kakaako private road owners.
